Farmer Suicide

One MP Minister Mr Bhupendra Singh says only 4 farmer suicides due to debt in an year. Data says 18000 farmer suicides have happened in past 15 years in MP. That makes an average of 1200 suicides per year.

If the minister is to be believed there should be 1196 suicides in past year for reasons other than debt. Further family members constantly claim debt to be the driver for suicide. So it seems either lot of people are lying or government does not want to recognize that problem exists.

Labeling the poor. How about labeling the rich?

Since Rajasthan government is labeling households of poor in below fashion

The idea being to name and shame well to do people from taking from public distribution system. And there seems to be some logic to it. It would be better if government can also include quantity of subsidised food grains provided - It is 5 kg of wheat for a month (Is that enough for an adult to survive?).

Earlier, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh too had painted 'main gareeb hun (I am poor)' on the houses of BPL families in 2012 to ascertain the number of beneficiaries under the Food Security Act.

On a related note - I believe something which is still pending - Putting up labels on household of defaulters. Mallya and party ? Any takers for the idea?

Selling food grains below market prices creates perverse incentives for black marketing. Government would do well to rather always sell at market prices and provide benefits to people below poverty line.
Further high difference between market price and subsidized price of food grains creates a poverty trap that keeps people below poverty line from rising above poverty line because that would entail losing all the benefits of being BPL. In the longer term government should strive to ensure that food grain prices are affordable by nearly everyone.

In developed countries such as USA poor people are entitled to food stamps. When they find livelihood to support themselves they willingly give up collecting food stamps.

India - Back office of weapon manufacturing

India accounts for 14% of weapons import market. Such is the poor performance of domestic companies.

So we are forced to import weapns technology. Even when we import we are importing old technologies. Example F16s are being ordered.

 India is looking to manufacture F16s locally. Point to be kept in mind is F16s have not been inducted in US defence since 1999 replaced by latest non detectable F35s instead. So we will be looking to become a manufacturer of old weapons.

Why do we fail in extradition cases

Abu Salem was caught by Portugal authorities in 2002. It took Indian babus 3 years to have him extradited from Portugal to India. And even after that Portugal courts have cancelled extradition.

Now Mr. Mallya is to ne extradited the process which began in January has gone on for six months with snail's pace. Even the presiding UK judge has commented on the delays in submitting evidence by Indian authorities saying it would take till April 2018 at this pace to arrive at a decision.

And here some people in my country are celebrating the efficiency of Babus under Modi while the fact remains that government babus have no accountability and no policy is being introduced to improve the situation.

NDTV saga

In the latest complaint, dated April 28, Quantum alleged “pecuniary loss of over Rs 48 crore to ICICI Bank arising out of unlawful/undue favour and profit transferred to promoters of New Delhi Television— being Dr Prannoy Roy, Radhika Roy and RRPR Holding.” The complaint added that “ICICI Bank allegedly conniving, committing fraud and entering into a conspiracy with promoters of NDTV to facilitate transfer of ownership of a news broadcasting company to a khoka/shell company.”

The allegation that no disclosure was made to SEBI and other regulatory authorities is not only incorrect and false but also does not cloth the CBI with any power to register cases and search, which further amplifies the fact that the search by the CBI is only a witch-hunt against independent media. 

 NDTV and its promoters have never defaulted on any loan to ICICI or any other bank. 

Details on loan:

The transactions in the NDTV case date back to the time of collapse of Lehman Brothers and the financial market meltdown in September-October 2008.

NDTV promoters, who faced margin calls from Indiabulls Finance as the company’s stock price tumbled from Rs 400 levels to below Rs 100, had struck an arrangement with ICICI Bank. A loan was raised from Indiabulls for an open offer, which was triggered because of a buyback of a stake sold to private equity player General Atlantic.

Citing balance sheets and other filings of RRPR Holdings, Quantum said ICICI Bank had granted a loan of Rs 375 crore at 19 per cent interest on October 23, 2008. Of this, about Rs 350 crore had been drawn. The total dues, along with interest, stood at about Rs 396 crore. But in August 2009, the bank entered into a one-time settlement with NDTV at Rs 350 crore. This, along with certain other dues, resulted in a loss of Rs 48 crore for the bank, alleged Quantum, and ensured gains for NDTV promoters.

Fishy matter:

Though the complaint was filed over a month ago, the FIR was registered at 3 pm on Friday.

On Thursday evening, NDTV’s senior anchor Nidhi Razdan had asked BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra to leave a debate mid-way after he alleged the channel was biased. The video of the interaction went viral.

In the end it looks more like an act of revenge rather than a raid carried out on strong evidence.
